Compounding

Mortar and PestleCompounding has long been an essential component of the pharmacy profession. However over time this skill has been utilized to a lesser degree due to large scale manufacturing of prescription medications. Compounding, or the preparation of medications from the raw chemical ingredients, one again is becoming an integral part of pharmacy practice.

The pharmacists at Jones Pharmacy have been specially trained in compounding unique medications to fit your pet’s needs.  We will gladly answer any questions that you have regarding compounding and work with your veterinarian to create a dosage form that incorporates your pet’s preferences to ensure successful medication therapy.

Why use a Compounded Medication?

Large scale manufacturing often is unable to address the specific needs of each pet.  Limitations may include the strength of the medication, dosage form, flavoring, and lack of preservative or color free options. In addition, medications may be discontinued and removed from the market.

Compounding for Your Pet

Trying to administer conventional medications to animals is not always easy! Often the medication needs to be cut into a smaller size to provide the correct dose, then hidden in food with the hope that the animal will ingest the medication. Other pets are more finicky and must be  wrestled with to take their prescription.

Compounded medications can alleviate these problems and  make medication administration easier and more accurate.

For example, an “Adapta-Cap” top provides a simple way to accurately measure liquid medication. This is especially useful when your pet’s dosage changes.  Oral and topical syringes are also available to aid with proper dosing.  Many other delivery systems are available, too! If you have something in mind it’s likely that it can be formulated to meet your pet’s needs.
